Our current facility is an animal hospital that houses over 500 animals undergoing veterinary treatment. However, due to the overwhelming number of animals needing lifelong care, it has unintentionally become a shelter to over 150 animals of all different species.
All of our shelter animals came to TOLFA suffering from horrific diseases and injuries. Despite our best medical and surgical treatment, they could not return back to their communities due to sustaining lifelong disabilities, displacement or conflict. In order to give these incredible SURVIVORS the high-quality, lifetime care they deserve and to create much needed space at our hospital; so we can save even more lives; a separate shelter is urgently needed.
We plan to build 10 specially designed dog gardens in which we will use both natural and man made enrichment to ensure our dogs have the happiest lives possible! Dogs like ‘Sheila’ here who is blind and struggled to manage a life on the streets. There will be large, spacious areas for our rescued cows, bulls, calves, work-worn donkeys, disabled camels and senior pony Hershey. The shelter will also be a ‘nursery’ for the abandoned calves who cannot manage on the streets and simply need love and care to thrive.
The shelter will not only provide a wonderful, high-welfare home for our shelter animals but it will also create desperately needed space at our hospital. In that space we will build a special care complex which will offer the highest level of treatment and rehabilitation to the most desperately injured and incapacitated animals. It will also enable us to expand our street dog sterilisation (ABC) project improving the health and welfare of the entire dog population across Ajmer & Pushkar whilst also saving human lives through mass rabies vaccination.
